Psychology 114 ( 3 credits - MiraCosta College) / Abnormal Psychology (Cathedral Catholic High School)
This course is a comprehensive survey of the troubled patterns of abnormal/dysfunctional behavior. Emphasis is placed on the theoretical models as they relate to assessment, diagnoses, etiology/causes, treatment, and prognosis of psychopathologies. This course is designed for those with an interest in psychology and the study of dysfunctional psychology. Units for this course will include: what is considered dysfunctional psychology, how disorders are studied and classified, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders, personality disorders, dissociative disorders, addiction, cognitive disorders, and developmental disorders. Students will also be exposed to what research is showing regarding healthy living, stress management, and ways of coping with dysfunctional behavior or mental experiences. Dysfunctional behavior will be studied through different lenses or perspectives such as: biological/neurological, cognitive, social-cultural, psychodynamic, and humanistic. It is recommended that students take Psychology 101 prior to taking this course.
